Chamomile seeds are first sown indoors where they can be provided with the care they need. The greenhouse environment is more convenient for chamomile growing given the relatively hot climate of August and September in Egypt. Indoors, seeds are offered a cool climate and protected against direct sunlight. as the climate gets colder, chamomile seedlings are carefully transplanted to the land.

Accountant for over 70% of Egypt’s chamomile production, Fayoum ideally meets all soil requirements for growing chamomile. Fayoum’s sandy loam dry soil achieves best chamomile yields thanks to good drainage, neutral pH level (close to 7), and being free of pesticide residues.

When the first few chamomile flowers start to bloom, they should be quickly picked to help the shoot system expand horizontally and grow healthier. Though the first patch of flowers will not be of good profit, it is necessary for the overall volume of harvest. If the initial flowers are not picked, they will grow taller and consume most of the nutrients, something that will negatively affect the blooming of other flowers.

Collecting chamomile flowers is done with utmost care. Nearly open flowers are picked on a daily bases to help flowers continue to bloom for a longer time. Moreover, flowers are gently picked, just below the flower head to let branches produce new flowers.

To get the highest oil content, flowers are collected in the morning after the dew has evaporated but before the sun is high.

To maintain its bright yellow color, a chamomile flower has to be dried in the open air away from direct sunlight; otherwise, the flower will be burnt by the sun and turn brown. In AromaFarma, we appreciate the natural beauty of chamomile flowers, using an effective drying system in a cool, non-humid, location, away from direct sunlight. Moreover, fresh flowers are not tightly stacked over each other to allow air to pass through. Large sheets of paper are spread under the flowers to absorb moisture and help flowers dry naturally and healthy.

Chamomile Medical Benefits

A traditional folk remedy, chamomile tea has been proven over time to heal a wide range of health issues. The plant has been used for several medicinal purposes for hundreds of years. Nowadays, studies are increasingly conducted to explore its various benefits; such as improving sleep quality, relieving stomach issues, helping with inflammation, and treating skin conditions.

First of all, chamomile tea is widely thought to help people sleep better. Studies have shown that chamomile contains antioxidants which may promote sleeping. A cup of chamomile tea in the evening may help fall asleep faster and reduce nighttime awakening.

Moreover, drinking chamomile tea significantly helps with anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It is most commonly used to help people calm down, feel relaxed and get rid of stress.

Another main benefit of drinking chamomile tea is improving digestive health. Though not clinically proven, chamomile is traditionally reported to be effective for promoting better digestion by reducing the risk of certain gastrointestinal conditions.

In addition, chamomile has long been used for the treatment of inflammation-related disorders. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile may protect against diarrhea, stomach ulcers, nausea and gas.

Chamomile skin benefits is another area of interest. Applying chamomile extract directly to a wound assists healing. Likewise, a few studies have found that chamomile ointments may help with eczema and mild inflammatory skin conditions.

Other possible health benefits of chamomile include relieving some of the symptoms of the common cold, lowering blood sugar in people with diabetes and targeting cancer cells, or even preventing those cells from developing in the first place.
